A wedding officiant, also known as a marriage celebrant, is a legally certified person who leads a wedding ceremony and makes the marriage official. They work with the couple to prepare for the wedding and can spend up to a year before the ceremony preparing and officiating. Their responsibilities include:
Before the wedding
Ensuring the couple has filed for a marriage license
Meeting with the couple to discuss the ceremony
Gathering information about the couple, such as the number of guests, wedding party participants, and guest colors
During the wedding
Leading the ceremony, including welcoming guests, introducing the couple, and pronouncing the couple married
Explaining the ceremony flow, rituals, vows, and rings
Answering questions
Assisting with practical aspects of the wedding
After the wedding
Signing the marriage license
Taking a photo with the newlyweds
Turning in the completed marriage license to the city or county clerk
